Why Photographers Want to Be Rock Stars

2010 February 5
by carlidimples

So many people want to be photographers.  It is an awesome, creative, seemingly glamorous life.  The secret is that photographers all want to be rock stars.  ALL of us.  I couldn’t understand why until the other night.  I was watching a movie called “Rachel Getting Married” about a woman who comes home from rehab for her sister’s wedding.  A huge part of the wedding celebration was music, they performed for each other, sang together, listened together, danced together.  I realized watching that why we all want to be rock stars.  Photography is a solitary art form.  We observe, and even when we carefully craft the whole scene we rarely get to be a part of the experiencing of our art.  It hangs on other peoples’ walls, plays on other peoples’ screens, sits on other peoples’ shelves.

Rock stars stand in front of their audience experiencing the feeling they are creating in others.  It is a communal art form in which the musician is an active participant.  They get to share the joy and receive the glory.

Photographers create, then set free, rarely to share in the experience, and never to live that moment again.

What was your most surprising challenge of planning your wedding?  Whether you are planning now or were married ten years ago (or more).

Many couples go into the planning process with ideas and expectations, well the brides do, and sometimes the reality hits us like a ton of bricks.  Was it the cost? the family tension? the difficulty of finding the right vendors?  Tell me a story in the comments section. Share your knowledge with the world.

ashley + matt {engaged}

2010 January 27

The first time I ever laid eyes on this couple was at Ashley’s sister’s wedding, and as the lore goes he almost wasn’t invited.  Fast forward to today and the happy couple is engaged and marrying in May.  There was something truly magical about this session, and just when I thought it was over God blessed us with a truly beautiful sunset.  I couldn’t have ordered a better day.  We even stopped for ice cream!

Lauren + Loren {engaged}

2010 January 26

One of the best parts of my job is meeting couples that were made for each other.  Lauren & Loren were.  You read that right, and as she puts it, they are over it.  They met through friends who obviously had a great deal of foresight.  Loren worked in a library and they are both book lovers, so his proposal was so apropos.  He snuck up on her at Barnes & Noble with a book he made of their love story… well part one.  I have the excellent fortune to document parts 2 and 3 (and hopefully the continuing saga).
